About Wiley X Climate Control Series

Wiley X started to make a name for themselves in the 1991 gulf war.  They built their reputation starting in Afghanistan and their reputation has reached almost mythical proportions during the war in Iraq.  There's a reason for that.

Wiley X is different from most eyewear companies.  They started in 1987 for the exclusive purpose of designing, developing and refining protective eyewear for military personnel in combat conditions.  Up until that point, most military eyewear was relegated to military "dust goggles".  They were not designed with ballistic protection in mind.  But the folks at Wiley X had a vision.  They felt eyewear for military personnel had to do more than protect personnel from dust.

Damage and injuries to eyes has always been a problem in the military.  The nature of the beast makes it so.  Simple things like taking an expelled 5.56 cartridge to the eye from a soldier or marine to the left of another can cause enormous career-ending eye damage.  And in combat it is a never-ending list of personnel with eye damage from a myriad of combat related events.

Up until Iraq, military eyewear was not something that was high on the military priority list.  But since the war, it is now considered an essential part of a combat soldier or marine's equipment.

When we say Wiley X has reached almost mythical status with military personnel, all you have to do is talk to a few personnel who have been in Iraq a few times.  The stories they can tell about embedded shrapnel in lenses and how they have seen first hand how eyes can be saved, and in a lot of cases their own eyes, is remarkable.  Casualties due to eye damage have dropped dramatically and it's all due to Wiley X's commitment, as they say, for "over-protecting" eyes.

While fashion eyewear folks clamor to get the military business, claiming their eyewear is "combat ready", none have the experience, engineering prowess or manufacturing expertise to make not only combat rated eyewear, but make them look like everyday sunglasses.  And none of them, not a one, has the reputation and respect Wiley X has in all branches of the military.

That's because Wiley X literally invented ballistic protective military eyewear.  Everyone else who invented sunglasses for the beach and ski slopes now claim to have "military" eyewear.  Given a choice, wouldn't you want to select protective eyewear from someone who designs, engineers and manufactures that kind of eyewear for a living?  Or, would you rather buy protective eyewear from a company who designs, engineers and manufactures eyewear for the beach?  That's what the military calls a "no-brainer", meaning it doesn't require a whole lot of thought and evaluation.

That brings us to the new 2006 Wiley X Climate Control Series.  The folks at Wiley X dabbled in standard eyewear for a few years, but this year they have recommitted the organization to what they do best, and that's to produce high-velocity protective eyewear.  Every model in the Climate control series, and there will be a total of 18 models by mid-2006, will be high-velocity protection rated.

The new climate control series provides maximum protection, whether you're an athlete, SWAT member, motorcyclist, skier, target shooter, and yes, even if you're one of America's elite.  You have the satisfaction and confidence that your eyewear is designed to take a hit the likes of which most eyewear would either fail or simply fall apart.

It's not just the lenses that separates Wiley X from all others, it's the frames as well.  Wiley X frames are made from truly space age materials.  They are as tough as the lenses themselves.  And the fit of lenses to frame must be exacting in order to achieve military standards for high velocity protection.  It's not good enough to say "ballistic polycarbonate lenses" if the lenses implode into the frame or pop out.  Both the frame and the lenses must meet standards of performance that most eyewear simply lack.

If you need maximum flexibility, the climate control series from Wiley X offers you just that.  Wear them like sunglasses and when you need additional protection from the elements, simply snap the included gasket in the frame and the protection you will receive in inclement conditions will amaze you.  And while a lot of eyewear out there with gaskets feel like eyewear with gaskets, you will be very pleased with how comfortable Wiley X feels when wearing in full protective mode.  It's like nothing else in the market.

Oh yes, if you haven't figured it out by now, we like Wiley X products.  We can't say enough about them, their management style and philosophy as a company, and their products.  They are first class in the industry, they take no shortcuts, and they don't try to be something they're not.  They know what they do best, and that's to protect your precious eyesight and they do it with style, precision, and products that others would like to offer, but just don't have the expertise to pull it off.

So, why would anyone want to pay $80 or more for a pair of sunglasses?  Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, you haven't been paying attention to what you've been reading.  So let's put in terms that hit home:

$80 is cheap compared to shards of glass or inferior lens materials embedded in your eye.

$80 is cheap compared to a lifetime of blindness in one eye, or God forbid, a complete loss of eyesight.

$80 is nothing in comparison to the loss of our most precious sense, the ability to see.  And, there is no other company on the face of the Earth that has dedicated itself to protecting eyesight more than Wiley X.

We think $80 is the cheapest insurance policy you can buy.  Simply ask a soldier or marine that's spent time in Iraq.  They'll tell you what it's all about.
